US Teenager Wins Rubik's Cube World Cup
US teenager Max Park has won the Red Bull Rubik's Cube World Cup for a second year. The 18-year-old won the men's and women's Speedcubing event, where players solve the puzzle as fast as they can. Park solved it in 5.908 seconds, winning a share of the $30,000 prize.
In the final of the competition, Park played against Australian Feliks Zemdegs, who has the Guinness World Record for the fastest time to solve a Rubik's Cube, doing it in 4.22 seconds in 2018. Park and Zemdegs are friends, and both were in the short Netflix movie The Speed Cubers.
The event, which took place on November 7, was online for the first time because of the pandemic. Players used a special Rubik's Cube that was connected to an app, which recorded their times.
Ernő Rubik, who invented the Rubik's Cube, watched the event online, and about 30,000 others have now watched it as well.
Juliette Sébastien of France won the women's Speedcubing event, with a fastest time of 6.923 seconds.
Chris Mills from the UK won the Rescramble event, where players are given a solved Rubik's Cube that they need to change to match to a random pattern. The Rescramble event is thought of as being harder than solving the puzzle the traditional way, because there are so many possible patterns a player may need to match. Mills solved the puzzle in 17.569 seconds.
In another event, called Fastest Hand, players have to solve the puzzle with only one hand. Philipp Weyer of Germany won, with his fastest time in the final being 13.074 seconds.
