Inter Milan midfielder Christian Eriksen may not be able to play in Italy's Serie A as he is being fitted with a heart starting device.

The Denmark international suffered a cardiac arrest in the country's Euro 2020 opener against Finland but was revived on the pitch and is now stable in hospital.

The 29-year-old was celebrated and applauded in Denmark's 2-1 loss to Belgium on Thursday with the ball being kicked out of play in the 10th minute, the player's shirt number.

It was confirmed by Danish team doctor Morten Boesen that Eriksen will need an ICD fitted, something that could prevent him from playing in Italy's top flight, according to the president of the Italian Society for Sports Cardiology.

"The Italian regulations are the strictest in the world and this is why the number of sudden deaths during physical activity is much lower than in other countries.

"The protocols are very strict, so it seems impossible that we will see Eriksen again in the Italian competition."

While the possibility of remaining at Inter is in doubt, the procedure doesn't necessarily spell the end of Eriksen's playing career.

Ajax and Netherlands player Daley Blind has a similar device fitted after collapsing during a pre-season friendly in August 2020 and remains a professional footballer.

The Danes went on to lose their opener 1-0 against Finland and they lost 2-1 to Belgium on Thursday, leaving them bottom of Group B.

While they haven't yet collected any points at the tournament they still have a shot at getting to the last 16 as they still have to play Russia.

Even if the Danes finish third in the group there's still a chance they could make the knock-out stages as the four best third place teams will qualify.

And Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand says the side aren't finished in the tournament.

He said: "As I told the players in the dressing room, the only thing I'm disappointed by is the result. I didn't expect too much for this game, but I can't describe the pride I feel for this squad.

"What they showed, the quality... Four days after almost losing one of their best friends, they get on and the play a game like this, this is just amazing. They totally dominated the best team in the world, and I have so much respect.

"With Christian in our minds and in our hearts, knowing that he's still here, we know that it's going to be a tough few weeks for you, Christian, but we're here for you.

"We're going to stick together and we're going to beat the Russians. We're not done in this competition."
