The Roman Way(2) 条条大路通罗马(二)
The Coliseum, regarded as the greatest amphitheater of antiquity, is an architectural marvel. This massive structure stands as a tribute to the power and dominance of the Roman Empire.
A typical day at the Coliseum was divided into three parts. In the morning, wild animals were pitted against each other in fierce battle before cheering crowds. At midday, the cruelest of all Roman spectacles took place─executions. This was when condemned criminals were tied to stakes in the middle of the arena. Seconds later, wild beasts including lions, tigers, and elephants were set loose to devour them. Last of all were the gladiatorial matches, which were held in the afternoon.
The gladiatorial matches were the highlight of a day at the Coliseum. These battles between gladiators were a fight to the death. The gladiators were often foreign slaves who had been captured in battle. Their only chance for survival was through victory in the arena. Along the way, some gladiators became famous, with a handful eventually winning their freedom.
The bloodiness of the games testified to the ruthlessness of the Empire. The popularity of the games secured the Coliseum's place as a center of public gathering for over four centuries after its initial opening.
The Ups and Downs of Escalator and Elevator Safety
In our apartment buildings, offices, train stations, and schools, elevators and escalators are essential. While these conveniences of modern life are practically everywhere, there are potential safety hazards involved that should be noted.
Count the number of times you take an elevator in any given week. For most city dwellers, this number can range anywhere from 50 to 200 times. The number one safety precaution to take when you ride an elevator is to mind your fingers. How often have you stuck your hand or arm in the door to stop it from closing? This may save the inconvenience of having to wait for another elevator, but this split-second decision could cost you your fingers. Instead of using body parts to prevent a door from closing, using the "Door Open" button or waiting for the next one is advisable.
Every day people are maimed or killed by faulty escalators. It is believed that 85 percent of these accidents are due to worn, damaged, or broken equipment. Lately, escalator safety has been at the forefront of public well-being. Though there may be large signs to show people how to ride an escalator, inconsiderate riders and those not paying attention can contribute to serious mishaps. Escalators are moving machinery that can weigh six tons or more. When riding one, use as much caution as possible and stay alert to everything around you.
Without escalators and elevators, life in our modern metropolises would be unbearable. But only when we use our common sense can they be safe for everyone.
